Sephora Return Policy (2026): Opened Makeup, No Receipt and Holiday Returns

Last updated: November 1, 2026 · On November 1, 2026 we checked Sephora’s official Returns & Exchanges page on sephora.com, including its extended holiday return period, Sephora.com mail-in instructions, gift return rules and the Sephora at Kohl’s section. Sephora can change its policy at any time, so confirm the live terms on sephora.com or with your store before you return anything.

Quick answer
  • Yes, you can return opened makeup: Sephora accepts new or gently used products for a full refund to your original payment method within 30 days of purchase, “in most cases.”
  • No receipt: you still need proof of purchase, such as a packing slip, order email or your Beauty Insider account. Sephora says products it cannot verify in its system are “ineligible for a refund, exchange, or credit.” It may also ask for a driver’s license or government ID.
  • Online orders: returns are free by mail with Sephora’s prepaid label (FedEx), or in a Sephora store. Original shipping charges are not refunded unless Sephora made an error.
  • Holiday 2026: purchases made October 30 to December 31, 2026 can be returned or exchanged through January 31, 2027; after 30 days you get store or online credit, not a refund.
  • Final sale: gift cards, certain Sephora Favorites kits and some intimate care items. Sephora at Kohl’s purchases go back to Kohl’s.

Sephora’s return policy is one of the more forgiving in beauty because it covers products you have already tried. If a foundation shade is wrong or a serum breaks you out, you can usually bring it back within 30 days, even if it is open. The catch is that the window is shorter than it used to be: Sephora says the current rules apply to purchases made on or after April 24, 2025, and it no longer publishes a longer credit-only window outside the holidays.

Below we explain each rule exactly as Sephora states it on sephora.com: the time limit, opened products, no-receipt returns, online and gift returns, what happens to your Beauty Insider points, the 2026 holiday extension and the separate rules for Sephora at Kohl’s.

Can you return opened or used makeup to Sephora?

Yes. Sephora’s policy says you can “return new or gently used products for a full refund to your original method of payment if returned within 30 days of purchase, in most cases.” That covers a lipstick you swatched, a moisturizer you used a few times or a fragrance you sprayed and disliked.

Sephora does not define “gently used” on its policy page, so there is no official fill-level rule. Common sense applies: an item that is nearly empty is unlikely to qualify. Sephora also says it “monitors return activity for abuse” and can limit or refuse returns or exchanges, so frequent returners may be turned down even inside the window.

Sephora returns without a receipt

A paper receipt is not required, but proof of purchase is. In stores, Sephora accepts any of these:

For Sephora.com orders returned in a store, also bring the debit or credit card you paid with. Sephora “may ask you for a driver’s license or government ID to verify your identity.” The key line for no-receipt shoppers: products that are not verifiable in Sephora’s system are ineligible for a refund, exchange or credit. As of November 1, 2026, the policy page does not offer a store-credit fallback for unverifiable purchases, so if you shop as a guest and lose the receipt, you may be out of luck. Signing in to Beauty Insider at checkout is the easiest way to avoid that.

How to return a Sephora.com order by mail (step by step)

  1. Start the return online. Use the “start or track a return” link on Sephora’s Returns & Exchanges page, which opens Sephora’s return portal.
  2. Select the items and a reason for each one.
  3. Pack the products, ideally in the manufacturer’s box and Sephora packaging, or in a padded envelope or box. No packing slip is needed when you use the prepaid label.
  4. Print the prepaid label or request a printerless FedEx Mobile Return Code where available.
  5. Drop the package at a specified FedEx location. Items with shipping restrictions (hazmat) must go back via USPS.
  6. Track it with the same link. Sephora says mailed returns can take up to 30 days to process, and your bank may take longer to show the refund.

Returns by mail with the prepaid label, and returns to a Sephora store, are free: there are no return shipping or handling fees. Sephora does not refund the original shipping charge unless the return is due to its own error. Watch the timing: Sephora’s page says Sephora.com items will not be refunded more than 30 days after the purchase date, so ship early in the window.

In-store, pickup and delivery-app orders

Purchases made in a Sephora store, Buy Online and Pick Up orders and Same-Day Delivery orders can be returned in a Sephora store within 30 days with a receipt or gift receipt, if the product is new or gently used. These orders cannot be returned by mail.

Sephora holiday return policy 2026

Sephora has published its 2026 extended holiday return period. It covers in-store and Sephora.com purchases made from October 30, 2026 through December 31, 2026, as long as they are returned or exchanged on or before Sunday, January 31, 2027.

Returning a Sephora gift

If you received a Sephora gift by mail and don’t want the refund going back to the person who bought it, Sephora says to visit a local Sephora store for an exchange or merchandise credit. Its instruction is direct: “Do not make a return by mail.” Bring the original packing slip, the order or shipping confirmation email, or the gift receipt email.

What you can’t return to Sephora

Beauty Insider points and store credit after a return

Sephora removes the Beauty Insider points and spend tied to a refund when the return is processed. That can affect your progress toward a higher tier, so returning a big haul late in the year may cost you status. Refunds include any taxes required by law.

If you end up with Sephora store credit, it has no expiration date. It cannot be redeemed for cash (unless the law requires it), reloaded, transferred or sold, and Sephora will not replace lost or stolen credit. Remember that in-store merchandise credit and Sephora.com online credit are separate and can’t be swapped.

Sephora at Kohl’s runs on Kohl’s rules. According to Sephora’s policy page:

Frequently asked questions

Can I return used makeup to Sephora?

Yes, if it is “gently used” and you return it within 30 days of purchase with proof of purchase. Sephora refunds the original payment method in most cases, but it can refuse returns it considers abusive.

Can I return to Sephora without a receipt?

Only if Sephora can find the purchase in its system, for example through your Beauty Insider account, order email or the card you paid with. Sephora says products it cannot verify are ineligible for a refund, exchange or credit, and it may ask for ID.

How many days do you have to return to Sephora?

30 days from the purchase date for a refund. The exception is the 2026 holiday period: purchases made October 30 to December 31, 2026 can be returned or exchanged until January 31, 2027, with credit instead of a refund after 30 days.

Are Sephora online returns free?

Yes. Returns by mail with Sephora’s prepaid label and returns of Sephora.com orders to a Sephora store have no return shipping or handling fees. The original shipping charge is not refunded unless Sephora made an error.

Can I return Sephora at Kohl’s products to a Sephora store?

No. Sephora at Kohl’s and kohls.com purchases must be returned to Kohl’s within 30 days with a receipt, and Sephora.com or Sephora store purchases can’t be returned at Kohl’s.
