How long do you have to return something to Kohl’s?
Kohl’s policy splits the standard window by payment method. If you paid any way other than a Kohl’s Card, “you have within 90-days from purchase to make a return.” If you paid with a Kohl’s Card, the window is 120 days.
The clock starts on different days depending on how you bought:
- In-store purchases: from the purchase date.
- Online orders shipped to you: from the ship date.
- Buy Online, Pick Up in Store or Ship to Store: from the date the order was ready for pickup.
The 2026 holiday return window
Kohl’s extends returns for the holidays. Purchases made October 4 to December 30, 2026 are eligible for return through January 31, 2027. For Sephora at Kohl’s, the extension covers purchases from October 30 to December 30, 2026; Kohl’s page lists January 31, 2027 in one section and January 30, 2027 in another, so we suggest treating January 30 as the safe deadline for Sephora items.
What about the “180 days” rule?
Many sites, and forum posts from 2019, describe a 180-day Kohl’s return limit. That figure does not appear on Kohl’s official return policy page as of November 7, 2026. Kohl’s page does not say when the windows changed, so go by the 90 or 120 days shown there.
Can you return to Kohl’s without a receipt?
Yes, for most items. Kohl’s says “most returns are accepted with or without a receipt.” Bring your original receipt, your Kohl’s Rewards account information or the credit card you used, and an associate can look up the purchase. Kohl’s can also find it by order number or by the return barcode in the Kohl’s app.
If the purchase cannot be found, you receive a Kohl’s Merchandise Credit (KMC) for the lowest discounted sale price of the past 13 weeks, not necessarily what was paid, and a valid photo ID may be required. Two important exceptions: Sephora at Kohl’s does not accept returns without a receipt, and Premium Electronics, Watches and mattresses need a receipt or account lookup.

- Premium Electronics and Watches: 30 days from purchase, with the original packaging and a valid receipt or account lookup.
- Mattresses: 30 days, with a valid receipt or account lookup.
- Sephora at Kohl’s: 30 days, product must be new or gently used, receipt required. Final sale Sephora products cannot be returned.
- Baby Registry: up to 365 days with a gift receipt or original receipt. Gift receivers get refunds as Kohl’s Merchandise Credit.
- Non-returnable items: beverages, opened or unsealed breast pumps and accessories, trading cards, and blind box items/toys cannot be refunded or exchanged.
- Threshold (freighted) delivery items: cannot be returned in store and carry a 15% restocking fee unless the item is defective.
How returns affect Kohl’s Cash
Kohl’s says Kohl’s Cash is typically awarded in $10 increments for every $50 spent on qualifying merchandise. Returns can undo that reward:
- If a return drops your purchase total below the threshold you earned at, unused Kohl’s Cash from that purchase is voided.
- If you already spent that Kohl’s Cash, your refund is reduced by the amount no longer earned.
- If you return an item you paid for partly with Kohl’s Cash, that amount goes back onto the same coupon, or onto a new coupon if the original has expired.
How to return an item to Kohl’s, step by step
In store
- Check the window (90 days, 120 with a Kohl’s Card, 30 for the exception categories).
- Bring the item plus your receipt, Kohl’s Rewards details, the payment card or the return barcode in the Kohl’s app.
- Go to the returns or customer service area. Card refunds should appear in about seven days, though your bank may take longer.
By mail (online orders)
- Start the return under Order History in your Kohl’s account, or in the Returns Portal with your order number and email.
- Print the packing slip and follow the shipping instructions.
- Pay the postage yourself: Kohl’s does not provide prepaid return labels, and original shipping costs and surcharges are not refunded.
- Allow up to 7 to 10 days after Kohl’s receives the package for the refund. Store purchases cannot be returned by mail.
Exchanges
Exchanges are in-store only and must be for the same item (brand, style and ticketed price), changing only size or color, while stock lasts. Gift receipts can be used for exchanges within the return window.
Amazon returns at Kohl’s
Kohl’s says Amazon returns are easy and free at most Kohl’s stores, excluding Anchorage, Alaska. Start the return in Amazon’s Online Return Center, choose Kohl’s Dropoff, then bring the item and the QR code Amazon gives you to a participating store. - Keep gift receipts. Without one, a no-lookup return gets credit at the lowest 13-week sale price.
