Last updated: October 25, 2026 · On October 25, 2026 we checked Walmart’s official Return Policy on corporate.walmart.com and the Returns page on walmart.com. Walmart can change or end any policy at any time, so confirm the live terms on walmart.com before you shop or return.
- Walmart gives you 90 days after purchase or receipt to return or exchange most items, with a store receipt or order number, and refunds go back to the original form of payment.
- Shorter windows apply: 30 days for consumer electronics, vacuums, e-bikes and most Marketplace items, 14 days for most wireless phones, and just 2 days for major appliances.
- No receipt? You need a valid government-issued photo ID, and an approved refund comes as a Walmart gift card.
- Returns are free in store, at curbside, by mail or by FedEx pickup; Walmart+ members get extra home pickup options.
- Most items bought from October 1 through December 31 can be returned until January 31, with exceptions.
If you are holding a Walmart bag, an online order that did not work out or a gift with no receipt, this guide explains what Walmart’s own return policy says you can do with it. It is written for US shoppers who want the real time limits before they head to the store or print a label.
We cover the standard 90-day window, every shorter window Walmart publishes (electronics, phones, appliances and more), exchange-only items, no-receipt returns, online and Marketplace returns, Walmart+ pickup returns, the holiday return period and the items Walmart will not take back.

How to return an item to Walmart (step by step)
- Check the window. Find the purchase date on your receipt or in your Walmart account purchase history and compare it to the table above.
- Have proof of purchase ready. Walmart asks for a store receipt or order number. If you lost the receipt, the store can try to look up store purchases with the debit or credit card you used, and online orders can be found through your account.
- Start the return. Online orders are started in the Walmart app or on walmart.com under purchase history. Walmart notes that available return methods vary by item.
- Choose a method. Walmart lists returns in store, at curbside, free by mail, or with a scheduled FedEx pickup. Its returns page says curbside and in-store drop-off do not require printing a label or repackaging.
- Get your refund. Walmart refunds to the original form of payment. Its returns page lists cash or check refunds as immediate, Walmart Balance, gift card, Walmart Cash or EBT refunds in about 3 hours, and credit or debit card refunds in about 7 days.
Opened items and exchange-only products
Walmart says new, unopened items can be returned for a full refund, but some products can only be exchanged for an exact or similar item once opened or used:
- Unlocked wireless phones (opened): exchange only within 14 days.
- Drones and projectors: exchange only within 30 days.
- Air beds and air mattresses: exchange only within 90 days.
- Power generators: exchange only within 90 days.
- Durable medical equipment such as crutches, walkers, slings, mobility scooters and pulse oximeters: exchange only within 90 days.
For luxury items over $300 shipped by Walmart (new or preowned apparel, shoes, accessories, jewelry and watches), Walmart publishes separate return steps, and the return request must be made within 90 days of purchase.
Returns without a receipt
Walmart does accept some returns without a receipt, but the rules are tighter. The customer must present a valid government-issued photo ID. If Walmart’s refund verification process accepts the return, the refund is issued as a Walmart gift card, not cash. Walmart also says it limits the number and frequency of non-receipted returns to prevent fraud and abuse.
Walmart does not publish the exact number of no-receipt returns allowed or a dollar cap, so it is worth trying a card or account lookup first. A lookup that finds your purchase usually means a refund to your original payment instead of a gift card.
Online, Marketplace and Walmart+ returns
Items sold by Walmart.com: the same 90-day policy and exceptions apply. Start the return in the app or on walmart.com, then drop it off in store or at curbside, mail it for free, or schedule a FedEx pickup.
Marketplace items: products sold by third-party sellers may have different terms. Walmart’s policy says most Marketplace items can be returned within 30 days, and Marketplace collectibles or luxury items within 14 days of receiving them. Returns of major appliances sold on Walmart’s Marketplace may carry a restocking fee of up to 20%.
Walmart+ members: Walmart’s policy states that Walmart+ members have additional home pickup options as part of their membership. Walmart does not spell out the details of those options in the return policy itself, so check the returns flow in your app. If you qualify for SNAP or Medicaid, our Walmart+ Assist guide explains how to get the membership at half price.

Walmart holiday returns in 2026
Walmart’s current return policy says most items purchased between October 1 and December 31 are returnable until January 31. Some exceptions apply, and Walmart names wireless phones, protection plans, major appliances and Dyson products among them. The policy text does not attach a specific year to this window, and we did not find a separate 2026 holiday return announcement from Walmart as of October 25, 2026.
In practice, that means a sweater bought on October 5 would normally have a 90-day window ending in early January, but the holiday rule lets most items go back until January 31. Items with shorter windows, such as phones and appliances, keep their own limits.
Tips to get the most from Walmart’s return policy
- Keep items sealed until you are sure. Unopened items get a full refund, while phones, drones, projectors and air mattresses may become exchange only.
- Pay with a card or shop logged in. A card or account lookup can replace a lost receipt and avoid a gift-card-only refund.
- Mark short deadlines on day one. Major appliances have only 2 days and most phones 14 days.
- Check the seller before buying. Marketplace items often have a 30-day window and the seller handles the refund.
- Use curbside or in-store drop-off. Walmart says these options need no printing or repackaging.
