Does Starbucks still give a free birthday drink in 2026?
Yes. Starbucks’ own Rewards FAQ for the relaunched program says every member level keeps the birthday perk: “you’ll still receive your free birthday Reward.” The Terms of Use describe it as one complimentary handcrafted beverage or one complimentary food item or one complimentary ready-to-drink bottled beverage.
Note that it is one item, not a drink plus a snack. It is also a Starbucks Rewards perk, so you need a free Starbucks Rewards account; there is no birthday freebie for guests who are not members.
Who qualifies for the Starbucks Birthday Reward?
According to the Starbucks Rewards Terms of Use, you must do three things to get the reward:
- Join Starbucks Rewards at least seven days before your birthday. Signing up on the day itself is too late for this year’s reward.
- Add your birthday to your account information. Starbucks says the birthday field is optional, but “if you do not provide birthday information you will not receive your Birthday Reward.”
- Make at least one Star-earning transaction before your birthday each year. This is the step most people miss. A purchase earns Stars when you pay with a Starbucks Card in the app, pay with a linked card or mobile wallet in the app, or scan your member barcode before paying with cash, card or mobile wallet. Guest checkout, alcohol and Starbucks Card reloads do not earn Stars.
Starbucks Rewards is not intended for anyone under 13, and members aged 13 to 18 can take part only under the supervision of a parent or legal guardian who agrees to the terms. The U.S. Terms of Use cover the program in the United States.
How long is the Starbucks Birthday Reward valid?
This is the part that changed with the 2026 relaunch. Your window depends on your Starbucks Rewards level:

The window always starts on your birthday, not before it. Green members who miss the day lose the reward. Status is based on Stars earned in a 12-month qualification period, which started for everyone on March 10, 2026, and redeeming Stars does not lower your progress.
What can you get with your Starbucks Birthday Reward?
The official terms let you choose one of three things:
- One handcrafted beverage, the drinks the barista makes for you.
- One food item.
- One ready-to-drink bottled beverage.
The terms exclude multi-serve food or beverage items (Starbucks gives a tray of Cranberry Bliss Bars and a Coffee Traveler as examples), beverages that contain alcohol, merchandise and packaged coffee. The terms do not publish a size limit or a dollar cap for the Birthday Reward, and they do not say whether paid add-ons such as extra shots or syrups are included, so ask your barista if you plan a heavily customized drink.
How to redeem your Starbucks Birthday Reward
- Check your account on your birthday. Starbucks says the reward is “automatically added to your account on your birthday.” You can see it in the Starbucks app or at starbucks.com/rewards.
- Go to a participating Starbucks store. The terms say the reward can be redeemed “at participating Starbucks stores only.”
- Scan your member barcode in the app or present your registered Starbucks Card when you order, and choose your drink, food item or bottled beverage.
- Use it inside your window: the day itself on Green, within 7 days on Gold, within 30 days on Reserve.
Why didn’t I get my Starbucks birthday reward?
Based on the eligibility rules in the official terms, check these first:
- No Star-earning purchase this year before your birthday. The requirement resets every year.
- You joined less than 7 days before your birthday.
- Your birthday is missing from your account. Open your account details in the app and confirm it.
- The window closed. On Green, it is valid only on the birthday itself.
- You paid as a guest. Guest checkout does not earn Stars, so it does not count as a Star-earning transaction.
