Lowe’s Return Policy (2026): 90 Days, No Receipt and Exceptions
Last updated: November 7, 2026 · On November 7, 2026 we checked Lowe’s official “Returns, Refunds & Exchanges” help page on lowes.com, including its return windows, proof-of-purchase rules, refund methods, online and mail-back returns, outlet rules and exceptions, and compared it with recent independent reports. Lowe’s can change its policy at any time, and the page shows no effective date, so confirm the terms on lowes.com or at the service desk before you return anything.

- 90 days for most items: Lowe’s lets you return most new, unused merchandise within 90 days with valid proof of purchase, for a refund to your original payment method.
- No receipt? You still need proof: Lowe’s says it “does not accept returns or exchanges without a valid proof of purchase,” but proof can be an order number, the card or digital wallet you paid with, your phone number or your MyLowe’s Rewards account. A valid picture ID may be required.
- 48 hours for major appliances and some equipment (generators, pressure washers, chainsaws, paint sprayers, tile saws, AC units), counted from delivery or pickup. Unopened, factory-sealed items get 30 days.
- 30 days for TVs and electronics, liquid paint, water heaters, HVAC, most outdoor power equipment and annual or house plants.
- 365 days for trees, shrubs and perennials, and for purchases made with a Lowe’s Commercial Account, MyLowe’s Rewards Credit Card, MyLowe’s Pro Rewards Credit Card or Lowe’s Business Rewards.
Lowe’s return policy is generous for everyday items, but it has more tiers than most shoppers expect. A box of screws or a faucet gets 90 days, a refrigerator gets just 48 hours, and a dead shrub can come back for a full year. Knowing which tier your item falls into is the difference between an easy refund and a “sorry, all sales are final.”
Below we break down every return window Lowe’s publishes, what counts as proof of purchase if you lost the receipt, how refunds are paid, how to return online orders, and the exceptions (restocking fees, holiday items, outlet stores) that catch people out.

Based on Lowe’s “Returns, Refunds & Exchanges” help page on lowes.com, checked November 7, 2026. Lowe’s can change its policy without notice.

How the Lowe’s 90-day return policy works
The core rule is simple: most new, unused items can be returned within 90 days of purchase, at any Lowe’s store, as long as Lowe’s can verify the purchase. The 90-day window also covers CRAFTSMAN-branded battery and electric outdoor power equipment, even though most other outdoor power equipment drops to 30 days.
Refunds normally go back to the original form of payment. Lowe’s says to allow up to 7 business days after the return is completed for the money to show up, depending on your bank. Labor, installation charges and delivery or shipping fees are not refunded unless the return was caused by a Lowe’s error.
How Lowe’s pays refunds by payment type
- Credit or debit card: back to the same card.
- Cash: cash, but refunds over $1,000 may be mailed as a check.
- Check: in-store credit if you return within 3 days; after that, cash or in-store credit as Lowe’s verification systems decide. Amounts over $1,000 may be mailed as a check.
- Gift card, merchandise card or in-store credit: refunded as in-store credit.
- Lowe’s Pay: credited back to the financing company, never as cash or store credit.
- MyLowe’s Money: returned to your MyLowe’s digital wallet.
Can you return to Lowe’s without a receipt?
Not without some proof of purchase. Lowe’s help page states plainly that it “does not accept returns or exchanges without a valid proof of purchase.” The good news is that a paper receipt is only one option. Lowe’s says it can verify your purchase with:
- Your receipt or online order number
- The credit or debit card or digital wallet you paid with
- The phone number on the purchase
- Your MyLowe’s Rewards or MyLowe’s Pro Rewards account
Lowe’s also uses refund verification systems that may ask for a valid picture ID (a state driver’s license, state ID or military ID). Some coupon blogs describe store credit being issued for receipt-less returns, but Lowe’s current official page does not mention any such option, so do not count on it. If you paid with a card or scanned your MyLowe’s Rewards account at checkout, the store can usually find the transaction.

Exceptions: items with shorter or longer windows
Major appliances and other 48-hour items
Refrigerators, freezers, washers, dryers, ranges, range hoods, dishwashers, over-the-range microwaves, cooktops, wall ovens and washer/dryer pedestals must be returned (or the return started) within 48 hours of delivery or pickup. The same rule covers portable and window air conditioners, evaporative coolers, construction heat, paint sprayers, tile saws, portable generators, pressure washers, chainsaws and pole saws. Utility vehicles, golf carts, go-karts and motorized bikes also fall here and must come back to a store in original condition with their paperwork and title.
Two ways to stretch that to 30 days: the item is still in its original, unopened, undamaged factory-sealed packaging, or you paid with an eligible Lowe’s credit product (Lowe’s Commercial Account, MyLowe’s Rewards Credit Card, MyLowe’s Pro Rewards Credit or American Express card, Lowe’s Business Rewards, Lowe’s Preload Plus Mastercard or Lowe’s Lease-to-Own). Gas-powered portable generators, pressure washers, chainsaws and pole saws are not eligible for that 30-day extension.
Plants and the one-year guarantee
Trees, shrubs and perennials can be returned for a replacement or refund within one year with a receipt. Annuals, house and patio plants (including Bonnie Plants) only get 30 days.
30-day items
TVs and electronics, liquid paint, water heaters, HVAC systems, special order custom blinds and window treatments, and most outdoor power equipment (lawn mowers, leaf blowers, tillers, snow blowers, trimmers, log splitters) have a 30-day window. Most third-party marketplace items also get 30 days, with exclusions.
What you cannot return
- Gift cards, in-store credits, refund cards and merchandise cards
- As-is merchandise, paint samples and trading cards
- Highway trailers and whole-house generators
- Safety masks and face coverings, and used items that have contacted bodily fluids
- Christmas and Halloween items after the holiday (they must come back on or before it, and items bought after the holiday are final sale)
Special orders and outlet stores
Special Order configured products carry a 20% restocking fee if returned or canceled more than 72 hours after purchase, and must go back to the store where you bought them. Lowe’s Outlet sales are final, except major appliances with a mechanical or electrical defect reported within 48 hours, and outlet items can only be returned to the same outlet.
Lowe’s credit cards, MyLowe’s Rewards and Pro: the 365-day window
The most valuable perk in the policy is tied to how you pay. Purchases made with a Lowe’s Commercial Account, MyLowe’s Rewards Credit Card, MyLowe’s Pro Rewards Credit Card or Lowe’s Business Rewards can be returned within 365 days, unless the item has its own shorter rule. For contractors and Pros buying in bulk, that makes returning leftover materials far easier.
The free MyLowe’s Rewards and MyLowe’s Pro Rewards loyalty programs don’t extend the window by themselves, but scanning your account at checkout stores your purchase history, which Lowe’s accepts as proof of purchase.

How to return a Lowe’s online order (step by step)
- Check the window for your item type in the table above, and remember 48-hour items run from delivery or pickup.
- Start the return online from your order history on lowes.com or in the Lowe’s app.
- Use the FedEx label if one is offered. Lowe’s provides a FedEx label for eligible items, and you can drop the package at any FedEx location.
- No label? Go to a store. Lowe’s says online and in-store purchases can be returned at any Lowe’s location if no FedEx label is provided. This also covers orders you picked up in store.
- Large items: return them to a store or call Lowe’s at 1-800-445-6937 to ask about home pickup. APO/FPO addresses are not eligible for no-charge pickup.
- Same-day delivery orders (Instacart, DoorDash, Shipt, Uber): return to any Lowe’s store within 90 days; the refund is issued as in-store credit.
Tips for a smooth Lowe’s return
- Inspect appliances the moment they arrive. The 48-hour clock starts at delivery, not at installation.
- Keep the box sealed until you are sure. Unopened 48-hour items get 30 days.
- Pay with the card or scan MyLowe’s Rewards. Either one doubles as proof of purchase if the receipt disappears.
- Bring a photo ID. Lowe’s may ask for one even with a receipt.
- Watch the 72-hour mark on special orders to avoid the 20% restocking fee.
- Ask about a price adjustment instead of a return. Lowe’s Lowest Price Guarantee can refund the difference when the purchasing customer requests it.
