Last updated: November 6, 2026 · We tried to check Home Depot’s official Return Policy page on November 6, 2026, but it could not be read automatically. The details below come from Home Depot’s own live-goods and specialty-items policy page plus several recent reports of the official policy (ConsumerAffairs, July 2026; SlashGear, August 2026; DealNews, updated August 2026; SimplyWise, updated October 2026). Policies can change, so confirm the window for your item on the product page, on your receipt or at the store’s customer service desk before you return it.
- Standard window: Home Depot accepts returns of most new merchandise within 90 days of purchase with a receipt or other proof of purchase.
- Longer window: 365 days for eligible purchases made with a Home Depot consumer credit card, Pro Xtra credit card or commercial account, unless the item has a shorter window.
- Shorter windows: 30 days for furniture, area rugs, gas-powered equipment and consumer electronics; 7 days for gas generators, air conditioners and dehumidifiers (per 2026 reports); 48 hours to report problems with major appliances.
- No receipt: bring a valid government-issued photo ID. Card purchases can often be looked up; otherwise you may get store credit, reportedly at the lowest recent selling price.
- Online orders: return them to a store (bring the order email, the card you paid with and ID) or start a mail return from your online order history. Refunds go back to the original payment method.
Home Depot’s return policy is generous for everyday items: 90 days for most things, and a full year if you pay with a Home Depot credit card. The catch is the long list of exceptions. Big-ticket and seasonal categories like appliances, generators, air conditioners and furniture have much shorter windows, and a few items can’t be returned at all.
This guide sums up the windows, what you need at the counter with or without a receipt, how online returns work and the mistakes that most often get a return refused.

How the Home Depot return policy works
The clock starts on the purchase date (or delivery date for delivered items). For most new merchandise you get 90 days to bring it back with your receipt, packing slip or order confirmation. Bring all parts, manuals and accessories, since missing components are a common reason for a refused or reduced refund.
Pay with a Home Depot consumer credit card, a Pro Xtra credit card or a commercial account and that 90 days becomes 365 days. The longer window does not override category limits. A TV bought with a Home Depot card still has a 30-day window, and a refrigerator still has the 48-hour damage rule.
Refunds go back to your original form of payment. Purchases made with store credit or a gift card are refunded as store credit, and gift returns usually get store credit too. In-store returns are processed at the counter, but your bank may take a few business days to post a card refund.
Exceptions: items with shorter windows
These categories have their own rules, and they trip up the most shoppers:
- Major appliances (48 hours): inspect refrigerators, washers, dryers, ranges and dishwashers when they arrive, with the driver there if you can. You can refuse a damaged delivery. Report damage or defects within 48 hours by calling 1-800-455-3869. After that, take your receipt to the store’s Special Services desk.
- 7-day items: 2026 reports list a 7-day window for gas generators, air conditioners and dehumidifiers. ConsumerAffairs also lists gas pressure washers. SlashGear reported that pumps, portable evaporative coolers and portable heaters were added in July 2026, and that holiday decor now has a 30-day window. We could not confirm those last two changes with a second source, so check the product page.
- 30-day items: furniture, area rugs, gas-powered equipment and tractors, and consumer electronics such as TVs and computers.
- Plants: perennials, trees and shrubs come with a one-year guarantee. Report live goods that arrive dead or damaged from an online order within 3 days by calling 1-800-430-3376 for a free replacement.
- Paint: custom-tinted paint generally can’t be returned just because you changed your mind, but Home Depot will fix a mis-mixed color.
- Special orders: returns or cancellations may carry a 15% restocking fee.
Some items can’t be returned at all: gift cards, cut flowers and floral arrangements, utility trailers, whole-house and stationary generators, paint, flooring and wallpaper samples, and custom products. Items sold by third-party marketplace sellers follow the seller’s own policy.
Returning without a receipt
A missing receipt doesn’t automatically mean no return. Here’s how it usually works:
- Bring a valid government-issued photo ID, such as a driver’s license. It is required for returns without a receipt.
- Bring the card you paid with. If you paid by credit card, debit card or check, or the purchase is linked to your Home Depot account or Pro Xtra phone number, the associate can often find the transaction and treat it as a receipted return. Reported lookup windows vary, so the sooner you go, the better.
- Expect store credit if nothing turns up. When the purchase can’t be found (for example, a cash purchase), Home Depot may give store credit, reportedly at the item’s lowest recent selling price.
- Don’t make it a habit. Returns without a receipt are tracked through your ID, and frequent ones can be declined.
How to return a Home Depot online order
You have two options for items bought on homedepot.com or in the app:
- Return to a store (fastest): bring the item, your order confirmation or shipping email, the card you paid with and a valid ID to any Home Depot customer service desk.
- Return by mail: sign in, open your order history, choose the item and follow the prompts to get a return label, then drop off the package. Mail refunds take longer because the item has to arrive first.
- Large or bulky items: call customer service to see whether at-home pickup is available.
Items that use fuel or flammable liquids, such as lawn mowers and leaf blowers, can’t go back by mail. Return them in store, and expect extra checks even if you drained them.
Tips and common mistakes
- Check the window before you buy big items. Appliances, generators and air conditioners have much shorter windows than the 90 days most shoppers expect.
- Keep the box and every part until you’re sure you’re keeping the item.
- Link purchases to your account. Signing in or using a Pro Xtra phone number at checkout makes lookups much easier later.
- Use a Home Depot card for projects that might change. The 365-day window helps with leftover materials on long renovations.
- Inspect deliveries right away. The 48-hour appliance rule isn’t extended for holidays or busy weeks.
- Look for discounts before you buy. Military members and veterans can check Home Depot’s military discount, and comparing Lowe’s prices is easy for big projects.
