Target Return Policy (2026): Opened Items, No Receipt and Circle Card
Last updated: October 24, 2026 · On October 24, 2026 we checked Target’s official return policy help page, the Target Returns page and the Target Circle Card page. Target can change or end any policy at any time, so confirm the live terms on target.com before you shop or return.

- Yes. Target accepts most unopened items in new condition within 90 days for a refund or exchange, and Target Circle Card holders get an extra 30 days on nearly all items.
- Target Owned Brand items can be returned within one year with a receipt.
- Electronics and entertainment have a 30-day window; all Apple and Beats products, including mobile phones, have 14 days.
- Opened, damaged or no-receipt items may be denied, and a no-receipt refund may come as a merchandise return card.
- Returns are free in store, through Drive Up in the Target app, or by mail with a free label dropped off at UPS.
If you are holding a Target bag, a gift without a receipt or an opened gadget you no longer want, this guide tells you what Target’s own help pages say you can do with it. It is written for US shoppers who want the real time limits before they drive to the store.
This guide covers exactly the standard 90-day window, the Target Circle Card extension, Target Owned Brands, electronics, Apple and mobile phone rules, opened items, no-receipt returns, Drive Up and mail returns, items you cannot return, and what is (and is not) published about holiday returns for 2026.

One detail matters for online orders: Target says the return window starts when the order is invoiced, which happens when any part of it ships, is delivered by a Shipt shopper or is ready for pickup. It does not start the day you open the box.
How to return an item to Target (step by step)
- Check the window. Find the purchase date on your receipt or in your Target account and match it to the table above. Add 30 days if you paid with a Target Circle debit or credit card.
- Gather proof of purchase. In store, Target asks for one of these: a valid receipt, a return barcode, or the payment card used for the purchase so the store can try to look it up. The Target app Wallet barcode works in place of a paper receipt.
- Pick a return method. Go to the store’s guest service desk, start a Drive Up return in the Target app, or print a free mail return label from your Target account.
- Pack everything. For mail returns Target asks you to include the original item, packaging and accessories. Some orders need more than one label.
- Get your refund. Refunds generally go back to the original payment method. Shipping charges may be refunded depending on the reason for the return.
Purchases made at Optical, Pharmacy, Starbucks or Target Tech must be returned or exchanged in those same areas of the store, not at the main guest service desk.

Opened items: what Target will and will not take back
Target’s standard rule is written for unopened items in new condition. The policy also states that opened, damaged or no-receipt items may be denied, and that Target reserves the right to deny returns to prevent fraud or abuse. In practice, opened items fall into three groups:
- Exchange only if opened: music, movies, video games and software, plus airbeds.
- Not returnable once opened: opened or unsealed breast pumps, and opened or defective collectibles.
- Opened phones: a restocking charge of up to $35 may apply. Unopened phones have no restocking charge. Phones bought with a carrier contract may also trigger early termination fees and must be returned in store with a Target Tech rep.
Returns without a receipt
Target says returns and exchanges without a receipt may be limited. If the store can find the purchase from the card you paid with, or you show the return barcode from the app, the return is treated as a normal receipted return. Without any proof of purchase, you may receive a refund in the form of a merchandise return card instead of cash or a card credit.
Target’s return help page does not publish a specific ID rule for no-receipt returns, so ask the guest service desk what they need before you go. For items bought from Target Plus partners, in-store returns without an eligible receipt are denied.
Items you cannot return
| Non-returnable item | Note from Target |
|---|---|
| Trading cards and accessories | Not returnable since January 30, 2023 |
| Gift cards | Except where required by law |
| Personalized items and digital downloads | Final sale |
| Opened or unsealed breast pumps | Final sale once opened |
| Opened or defective collectibles | Not returnable |
Drive Up and mail returns
Drive Up: Target lists Drive Up returns as free. You start the return in the Target app, let the store know you are on your way, and tell them when you arrive, all without leaving your car.
Mail: print a free return label from your Target account, attach it to the package and drop it off at an authorized UPS location. Target may issue the refund before it inspects the item, but if the item turns out to be ineligible, your card may be charged. Large items over 150 pounds may qualify for return pickup, and a person 18 or older must sign unless the original delivery was To-the-Door.
Target cannot accept international returns or exchanges in its stores, including for online orders.

Other real ways to save at Target
- Target Circle Card: Target says cardholders get 5% off Target purchases instantly at checkout (some restrictions apply), and that the 5% stacks on top of Target Circle deals.
- Longer returns with the card: the extra 30 days is added to each item’s standard window. It does not apply to Target Optical purchases, non-returnable items, contract mobile phones, or online SNAP-eligible purchases paid with both EBT and a Target Circle Card.
- Free shipping with the card: Target says cardholders get free standard shipping on most items at Target.com.
- Target Circle deals: Target’s free loyalty program carries the deals that the Circle Card’s 5% discount stacks with.
- Military households: see our guide to the Target military discount for current eligibility.
Tips to get the most from Target’s return policy
- Keep items sealed until you are sure. Many categories become exchange-only or non-returnable once opened.
- Use the app Wallet barcode. It replaces a paper receipt and avoids a merchandise return card.
- Mark the shorter deadlines. Apple and Beats products have 14 days, other electronics 30 days, so set a phone reminder on purchase day.
- Pay with the Target Circle Card for big buys. The extra 30 days can save a return you would otherwise miss.
- Check holiday items on the product page. Holiday and limited-time collections may have their own return rules.
