How the Verizon military discount works

Verizon’s military program is a recurring monthly discount, not a one-time coupon. Once you verify your status, Verizon applies the discount to your mobile plan, and it shows up on your bill within 1-2 billing cycles, according to the FAQ.

The amount depends on your plan. On the current Unlimited Ultimate, Unlimited Plus and Unlimited Welcome plans (and a list of older plans such as 5G Start, 5G Play More, 5G Do More, 5G Get More and Welcome Unlimited), the discount is a flat amount per account: $10 with 1 phone, $25 with 2-3 phones and $20 with 4+ phones. Note that the FAQ lists a smaller amount for 4+ phones than for 2-3 phones. On the Simplicity Plan it is 10% per eligible line, and on most other advertised plans it is 15% off the plan’s account access charges.

Verizon’s main military landing page headlines the offer as “10% off” your mobile plan each month and shows the Simplicity plan for new customers “as low as $27/line /mo” after Auto Pay and the Switch & Save discount, plus taxes and fees, personal lines only. The landing page does not break down the Unlimited plan amounts; those come from the support FAQ.

Verizon says no annual renewal is required, though it may occasionally ask you to re-verify.

Who qualifies for the Verizon military discount?

  • Active duty US military, all branches.
  • Military retirees and veterans.
  • Current or former National Guard and Reserve members.
  • Gold Star family members and next of kin. Verizon’s FAQ says Gold Star next of kin can register and use a DD Form 214 to validate eligibility.
  • Spouses: Verizon’s pages do not list military spouses as a separate eligible group. The discount is applied to the account of the eligible person, and it covers up to 4 mobile lines on that account, so family members on the same account can benefit.
  • Account role: the person registering must be the military or Gold Star family member and also the Account Owner or an Account Manager.

How to get the Verizon military discount, step by step

  1. Go to verizon.com/military. Select “Verify military status” (or “Check eligibility” for Fios).
  2. Verify with ID.me. Click “Get Started” and sign in to ID.me, or create an account. ID.me may ask you to upload a document proving military status. Verizon notes ID.me does not work in Internet Explorer.
  3. Choose “New to Verizon” or “Already with Verizon.” New customers pick a qualifying plan; existing customers apply the discount to their account.
  4. Pick the lines. The discount can be applied to up to 4 mobile lines on the account.
  5. Watch for the confirmation email. The discount should appear on your bill within 1-2 billing cycles.
  6. Prefer in person? Verizon says verification can also be completed in a Verizon store.

Rules and fine print

  • Up to 4 lines per account.
  • Not eligible: prepaid plans and promotional plans.
  • No stacking with similar discounts: it can’t be combined with Deals at Work, Student, or other “Those Who Serve” discounts (teachers, nurses, first responders). For Fios, Verizon allows one military, first responder, nurse or teacher discount per account.
  • What you can combine: the Auto Pay and paper-free billing discount, and Mobile + Home savings.
  • Legacy customers: customers who signed up before 8/5/19 keep their earlier discount amount, and Go Unlimited and Beyond Unlimited customers who signed up before 6/18/18 have a $15 account-level discount, per the FAQ.
  • Accessories: the military page says 25% off select accessories, online only, while supplies last; the FAQ adds 10% at a Verizon store. Apple products are excluded. If you want the 25%, buy online through My Verizon.
  • Fios setup: a $99 professional setup charge may apply, which Verizon says may be waived for select plans, locations, service combinations or ordering methods.

Other real ways to save at Verizon (no code needed)

  • Auto Pay and paper-free billing: Verizon’s FAQ confirms this discount stacks with the military discount.
  • Mobile + Home: combining Verizon mobile with Fios or home internet can add more savings on top of the military discount.
  • Switch & Save: the military page’s $27/line Simplicity price for new customers already includes the Switch & Save discount.
  • Accessories online: ordering through My Verizon gets 25% off select accessories instead of 10% in store (Apple products excluded).

Tips before you buy

  • Verify with ID.me before you choose a plan, so you can compare your real monthly price.
  • Do the math by plan: on Unlimited plans the discount is a flat amount per account, so a 2-3 line account gets more ($25) than a 4+ line account ($20), according to the FAQ.
  • If you are on prepaid, you will need a postpaid plan to get the military discount.
  • If you already have a teacher, nurse, first responder or student discount, check which one saves more, since they don’t stack.
  • Deploying soon? Ask about Military Short Term Suspend or SCRA suspension before you go.
